Challenging Congress on Healthcare

RUSSELL MOKHIBER
Founder of Single Payer Action, Mokhiber said today: “Obamacare will cost $1 trillion over ten years and not cover 37 million Americans. By contrast, a single-payer system cuts out the private health insurance corporations and thus saves $4 trillion in administrative costs and waste over ten years. Those savings would be used to cover everyone. That’s why in August during the Congressional recess single-payer activists will continue to confront members of Congress all around the country, urging them to dump Obamacare, start from scratch and pass single payer.

“Members of Congress who say they support single payer will be asked why they have not gotten the Congressional Budget Office to do a cost estimate on single payer. A CBO scoring would confirm the massive savings from single payer that you don’t get with a ‘public option.’ A single payer system would put everyone — from members of Congress to an average worker — in the same system.”

Mokhiber has recently questioned several members of Congress, including Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.), Rep. Tom Latham (R-Iowa) and Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.).
