Wolff, an instructor at the Graduate Program in International Affairs at the New School University who regularly writes on the economy, said this morning: “Today another 216,000 job losses were reported across the month of August. Our national unemployment rate moved up to 9.7 percent. … The official unemployment rate reported is the U-1 unemployment rate. This does not include the involuntary part timers, discouraged workers who have stopped looking and people who are marginally attached to the labor force. The unemployment rate that includes all these people is U-6. The inclusive unemployment rate is 16.8 percent.”
