  • Having a Baby = Higher Odds of Medical Debt

Having a baby in the last 12 months is associated with an increased chance of being in medical debt by nearly 50 percent.

  • “Provocative NATO Undermines Security of the Nordic Region”

The days when Sweden and Finland can — in principle, at least — work for alternatives are numbered. That is, for the UN Treaty on nuclear abolition and the UN goals of general and complete disarmament, any alternative policy concepts like common security, human security, a strong UN etc. They won’t be able to serve as mediators, and no NATO member can pay anything but lip service to such noble goals. NATO is not a liberal institution that promotes alternatives; it’s a juggernaut that eradicates them.

  • “Biden’s Debt Ceiling Cave”

President Biden and Attorney General Garland have no reason to defend the nonsense which is the debt ceiling, besides a vague sense of formality and tradition driven by elite political etiquette that Republicans have long since abandoned. The media needs to quit deferring to the debt ceiling’s political theater and engage more with the essentially uncontroverted legal experts pointing out that it cannot be implemented in a constitutional manner.

  • Supreme Court Targets Wetlands

We are outraged, though sadly not surprised, that this ultra-right-wing Supreme Court would choose to decimate long-standing common-sense protections for sensitive wetlands throughout the country. Wetlands play an integral role in protecting downstream waterways and reducing flooding — which will only worsen as climate change makes extreme weather more frequent. Today’s decision rejects this established science in favor of corporate developers’ profiteering.

  • Is There a Ceiling on Military Spending? New Report: 62 Percent of Budget on War and Militarism

“When we invest so heavily in militarism at home and abroad, we deprive our own communities and people of solutions to problems that pose immediate security threats,” said co-author Lindsay Koshgarian, Program Director of the National Priorities Project. “We underfund programs to end poverty, provide affordable housing, bolster public education, and protect clean air and water at our peril. Spending on militarism takes up the majority of the federal discretionary budget, and it has grown faster than all other spending. If we keep up these patterns, we are hurtling toward a future where we can’t afford the basics of a…

  • Is Biden Prolonging the Yemen War?

El-Tayyab, said: “I’m very concerned that the administration is adding all these conditions to a full U.S. military exit and a Saudi-Houthi deal. I’m worried that they’d use the idea that we need to have a perfect inclusive peace as a precondition to lifting the blockade. … Yemenis should be allowed to chart their own future. It increasingly seems like the Biden administration would rather slow down diplomatic progress instead of finally just ending the Saudi-Houthi conflict.”

  • Residents on Strike At Hospital Hard-Hit by Covid

Resident doctors are on strike at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens. This is the first doctors’ strike in New York City in 33 years.

  • Pakistan’s Khan Against the Generals — and the U.S.?

For much of the past week, former Pakistani Prime Minster Imran Khan’s house in Lahore has been surrounded by armed police, and the Rangers — a repressive force straddling the police and Army but under civilian control — have been on standby. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court has ruled that Khan should not be arrested, but he doubts he will stay out of jail for long. The entire leadership of his party, the PTI [Pakistan Movement for Justice], is currently behind bars. A state crackdown is in full swing.

  • Amoxicillin Shortages

Shortages of critical medicines––including amoxicillin, the generic antibiotic––are harming pediatric patients, their families, and their providers.

  • Biden in Hiroshima as His Policies Threaten Nuclear War

The public is shockingly oblivious to the threat of global nuclear war. This is the most dangerous period, even exceeding the Cuban missile crisis. The proximate cause is the crisis in Ukraine, but the stage was largely set by the U.S. government killing a series of treaties. The Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty, signed in 1972, was a bedrock. It made clear that ABM systems could only work in the context of a massive first strike. George W. Bush terminated the treaty in 2002 despite Russian objections.

  • Trump Dominates UN, Israel Ethnically Cleanses in Lebanon

“The UN Security Council will consider another outrageous resolution [Friday], this time drafted by Bahrain (the current UNSC President and a US-Israel ally). A month into the U.S.-Israel unlawful aggression on Iran, the draft is entirely silent on the aggression, its perpetrators, and on ending the attacks, and instead seeks to expand the conflict by…

  • The DNC’s Disconnect with Democrats on Israel

As the Democratic National Committee, the governing body of the Democratic Party, prepares to convene its semiannual meeting on April 9 in New Orleans, activists are pushing to bring the party into line with the views of registered Democrats on Israel. The DNC Resolutions Committee will meet to consider 32 proposed resolutions, including seven resolutions…

  • Trump: Threats, Lies and Videotape

“In a primetime address, President Donald Trump reiterated his threat to destroy Iranian energy infrastructure and provided no timeline for an end to his illegal war.”

  • Statement from the Board of Directors and Executive Director of the Institute for Public Accuracy

The Institute for Public Accuracy has received dismayed inquiries about a recent post on the personal X account of Sam Husseini, who is IPA’s communications director and senior analyst. The post––“BREAKING: Iran kills FIVE BILLION PEOPLE”––was not attributed to or in any way endorsed by IPA, nor would such content ever appear on an IPA…

  • Misleading Spin About the SAVE Act

The SAVE Act would “throw up obstacles for all voters, making it more difficult for them to access their rights,” FAIR media analyst Julie Hollar writes. She argues that many mainstream media outlets have failed to properly cover the dangers of the SAVE Act or to debunk Republicans’ false claims about voter fraud, instead falling…

  • Jewish Power Party Wins Death Penalty by Noose

“The Knesset’s approved legislation will no longer perform the death penalty via lethal injection but rather transform the execution of Palestinian detainees into a colonial spectacle. In other words, the original mode of colonial execution has been restored as the chosen method of capital punishment par excellence.“

  • Murderers Who Flee to Israel

“A member of an offshoot of the Jewish Defense League — designated by the FBI as a ‘known violent extremist organization’ — was allegedly building explosive devices to target the home of Nerdeen Kiswani in a chilling act of political violence. The defendant reportedly planned to flee to Israel following the attack.”

  • Israel Committing “Journocide”

“What we’re see is journocide — an attempt at killing all those who risk their lives to get on-the-ground information to us.”

  • Pentagon Protests

On Thursday, McGovern spoke at and moderated the event “Press Briefing: Imminent Threat — or Ruse? Intel on Iran a Flashback to Iraq?“ organized by the Eisenhower Media Network at the National Press Club. He was a top CIA analyst for decades and a founder of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity. Thursday evening, he went…

  • Subimperial” BRICS: “Talk Left, Walk Right”

“Subimperial BRICS bloc is the rabies-addled ‘dog that didn’t bark,’ when confronted by even Trump’s excesses of imperialism and Netanyahu’s genocide. But occasionally when some in the pack do bark left, we should not be distracted or surprised when – as any Palestinian knows — they simultaneously bite right.”
