“Dismal” Democratic Leadership Boosts GOP’s Midterm Prospects

With 10 months to go before the midterm election will decide whether Republicans continue to control Congress, the author of the new book The Blue Road to Trump Hell said today that one of their biggest advantages is “the dismal quality of Democratic Party leadership.” Norman Solomon contended that “the uninspiring minority leaders in the Senate and House, Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, are disconnected from the party’s base and unable to articulate the kind of visionary outlook needed to generate a huge turnout against Republican candidates this fall.”

Writing in The Guardian last week, Solomon asserted that the party’s governing body, the Democratic National Committee, “is now replicating the kind of tacit disdain for rank-and-file Democrats that fueled the 2024 catastrophe. … A party unable to publicly examine its own failings is unlikely to climb out of the rut that proved so helpful to Donald Trump in 2024.”

Appearing on Democracy Now! on Dec. 31, Solomon said that “we have been led down the path to a fascistic politics out of the White House and Congress and much of the judicial branch because of the failure of corporate Democrats to defeat Republicans or have decent policies.”
