The first national organization to back Zohran Mamdani’s campaign for New York mayor said today that his victory “shows that voters are ready to move on from corporatist Democratic politics and embrace truly progressive change.”
In a statement, RootsAction said “we announced our support on the day his campaign launched in October because we knew that his platform — with such planks as freezing rent, creating free bus service, and no-cost childcare — was tailored to help working people in New York City, not the landlord lobby.”
The statement added: “Zohran’s success does not just point to a new era for New York. It also means that the progressive movement is rejuvenated nationally. When candidates reject big donors and corporate lobbyists and speak directly to working people, they can win. Looking ahead, this campaign can be replicated elsewhere across the country — it just requires the bravery to throw off the yoke of the Democratic Party’s consultant class and embrace pro-working-class politics.”
