Trump Congo Deal: For Peace or Profit?

U.S. President Donald Trump will host the leaders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo on Thursday to sign what the White House called a peace agreement.

MAURICE CARNEY, [email protected]
Executive director of Friends of the Congo, Carney made the following points:

1. It is a deal for profit rather than peace. Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Michael Bloomberg, Eric Prince and Donald Trump’s former election campaign finance co-chair, Gentry Beach, are lining up to profit from the deal.

2. The deal lacks accountability for the aggressor nation, Rwanda who has led a three-decade long war of aggression and plunder against the Congolese people.

3. The matter of justice for the Congolese people who have been harmed during the conflict and continue to be killed, raped and displaced in spite of the agreement is totally absent. …

4. It is an arrangement among local elites in the Great Lakes region of Africa and global elites in Doha and Washington — local voices and those most affected have been excluded from the process.

5. It is an economic and political pass for Paul Kagame and Rwanda because in addition to no accountability for the crimes they have committed in the Congo, they stand to have their illicit trade in Congolese minerals legitimized and backed by U.S. investment dollars.
