Will The Hague Group Live up to Their Legal Obligations?

The Cradle reports: “Kamal Adwan Hospital chief ‘starved, tortured, isolated’ in Israeli jail,” AntiWar.com reports: “Israeli Attacks in Gaza Kill 117 Palestinians Over 24 Hours” and “Church Leaders Visit Christian West Bank Village Under Israeli Settler Attack,”

Colombian president Gustavo Petro is hosting a meeting of The Hague Group in Bogota and recently wrote the piece “Governments like mine have a duty to stand up to Israel. Far too many have failed.” See livestream from Progressive International and IPA news release “Peace Force for Gaza ‘the Least’ The Hague Group Can Adopt.”

Kelly is board president of World BEYOND War. See her recent appearance on “Democracy Now!” She said today: “Civil society throughout the world must urge governments convened by The Hague Group emergency summit to do more than condemn Israel’s occupation and genocide of Palestinians.

“Civil society in every nation state attending The Hague Group conference must also demand and take steps to ensure that Israel is in the process of implementing UN General Assembly Resolution ES-10/24 of Sept. 18, 2024, which states that Israel must withdraw completely and fully from the Occupied Palestinian Territories within one year, as defined by internationally-recognized borders set out in UN Security Council Resolutions 242 (1967) and 338 (1973). This resolution was adopted decisively and with overwhelming consensus by the UNGA and it is the obligation of all Member States to implement and enforce it in keeping with Article I of the UN Charter.

“Every member state of the United Nations General Assembly is obligated, under international law, to:

* Cease all trade, investment, economic, diplomatic, and cultural relations with the Israeli government

* Strip Israel of its UN credentials

* Call on all member nations to implement a total embargo on arms

“Countries participating in the summit convened by The Hague Group must must uphold their obligations, under international law, to hold Irael and its partners accountable for war crimes, ethnic cleansing and genocide.”

The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, states in its opening paragraph: “The Contracting Parties confirm that genocide, whether committed in time of peace or in time of war, is a crime under international law which they undertake to prevent and to punish.”
