Two national activist groups launched a petition drive today urging the Democratic National Committee to convene an emergency meeting at “this perilous moment for the future of the United States.”
Progressive Democrats of America and RootsAction initiated the petition, which says that the DNC “should convene an emergency meeting of all its members — fully open to the public — as soon as possible.” The petition contends that “business as usual must give way to truly bold action that mobilizes against the autocracy that Donald Trump, Elon Musk and their cronies are further entrenching every day.”
The petition adds: “The predatory, extreme and dictatorial actions of the Trump administration call for an all-out commensurate response, which so far has been terribly lacking from the Democratic Party.”
The petition launch came hours after Joe Biden made his first post-presidency speech. In its news story about the speech last night, The Associated Press quoted RootsAction’s national director, Norman Solomon, who said: “The best role that Biden could play going forward would be to stay off the public stage. That might sound harsh, but frankly, his self-centered mentality has already done so much damage to the Democratic Party and the country that he certainly owes us some belated humility.” (Solomon is executive director of the Institute for Public Accuracy.)
