The Detroit News reports: “UAW votes to divest from Israel Bonds,” and quotes a UAW member, Olga Karounos: “I don’t just hope, but I know … that this is going to send a message to — not just the billionaire class — but to politicians and any single person who is not afraid of standing up to genocide, to (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu, to the United States government, and will put the UAW again on the map for standing for international solidarity.”

Navruz Baum writes in The Daily Struggle: “The UAW reportedly holds at least $400,000 in these investments. Delegates from Unite all Workers for Democracy (UAWD), the class struggle movement of the UAW, representing UAW members across the country, led the effort to divest. … UAW members have been fighting to divest dues money from Israel bonds for over 50 years. In the 1970s, the UAW Arab Workers Caucus picketed UAW events, struck, and organized for the 1974 UAW Constitutional Convention demanding divestment. Workers redoubled their efforts after the apartheid state escalated its genocide in October 2023.”

Hyde has been a lead organizer in the effort and was at the UAW’s 2026 Constitutional Convention with the Unite All Workers for Democracy caucus. He is with local ALAA 2325 and has worked with Labor for Palestine National Network

He notes that this struggle “was in response to the call made by Palestinian Unions for divestment. …  This led to the UAW calling for a ceasefire and for the last 2 1/2 years we’ve tried to pressure the new Fain administration of the UAW to take concrete action rather than just pass resolutions. But we’re also standing on the legacy of the Arab Workers. … Arguably this is the largest institution in the U.S. — representing over 1 million workers and retirees — to vote to divest fully. But this is just the first step. We now have to organize to stop shipments and manufacturing — which the UAW is directly implicated in.”
